In continuous casting of semis like slabs blooms center segregation and centre porosity are prevalent. Due to volume contraction associated with the solidification process of liquid steel the shrinkage cavity is produced at the crater of final solidification region. The appearance and intensity of center segregation and porosity are normally closely related to steel grade, superheat, casting speed & cooling history.

Soft reduction technology is used to compensate the solidification shrinkage In this process roll gap is reduced by a calculated amount in the mushy zone. The compression produced by the soft reduction enables the condensed liquid steel to flow in the reverse direction of casting & also prevents inter dendritic flow in the transverse direction which may lead to redistribution of solute elements in the liquid steel Online soft reduction is used along with DSC model which accurately predict the mushy zone.

The use of soft reduction technology has improved the acceptability of the slabs for producing high strength steel with qualified mechanical properties. The center porosity and center segregation has improved to Mannesmann standard 1 in most of the cases.
