Strangers and Conflict Management Kelli Jernigan

Communicating with strangers can be very dangerous!

Communication includes face-to- face, over the phone, or over the internet.

Strangers can gain access to personal information over the internet.

Do not answer questions or open the door for someone you do not know. Take a message on the phone, but hang up if they make you feel uncomfortable.

Let’s learn more about stranger danger!

Social networking sites offer access to your information, too. If you have an account, do not post personal information, check your privacy settings, and do not chat with strangers.

What should you do if you feel lost or scared, threatened, someone is following you, or if someone tries to lure you away?

However, strangers you encounter are not bad. People we see but do NOT know are strangers to us. We have to careful because some people are dangerous! Strangers who can be trusted include: Teachers Police officers Store employees Security guards

REVIEW Explain the dangers of communicating with strangers. List strangers that can be trusted. How should you respond if a stranger is trying to lure you away?

Strengthening relationships with non-strangers is important!

Treat friends and family how you would want to be treated!

Prejudice A form of disrespect Judging someone or having an idea about someone before you really know them

A form of prejudice is stereotyping.

Discrimination is also an example of prejudice. Discrimination is the unfair treatment of someone that belongs to a certain group.

All of these things are barriers to healthy relationships, and greatly affect other people’s self-respect and feelings.

It is important to be tolerant of others’ differences. Tolerant people value diversity and can appreciate differences in other people’s cultures, interests and beliefs.

REVIEW Define prejudice, stereotype, and discrimination. Explain how these behaviors negatively affect others.

When people exhibit these behaviors conflict and violence can occur. Let’s learn how to avoid this!

When there is an issue, there are two ways to handle it: 1. Walk away 2. Respond to it

If the conflict could become dangerous, it is best to get out of the situation. Walking away gives you a chance to calm down and think clearly.

When conflicts are not resolved, the situation can get worse and even result in violence. VIOLENCE IS NEVER THE ANSWER!!!

Conflicts can often be resolved with compromise and negotiation!

Conflicts can also be solved by bringing in a neutral person to mediate and help you talk out the problem!

Working to resolve conflicts can improve communication skills and problem-solving skills!

REVIEW How can you avoid conflict? What are the two ways to respond to a situation? How can walking away help you?

EXCELLENT JOB TODAY!!!!
