Literary Terms Plot – The sequence of events in a story leading from conflict to resolution. Climax Rising ActionResolution Exposition

Literary Terms Exposition – The first part of a plot; it includes the introduction of setting and characters as well as background information.

Literary Terms Setting – Time, Place, & Atmosphere

Literary Terms Direct Characterization – explicit statements about how a character looks or the traits that he possesses - physical traits—tall or short, color of hair - personality traits—she is happy or sad, he is grouchy in the morning Example from GPE, description of butcher’s son “He must have been the son, for he was taller than his father, he had the same bright blue eyes. His blond hair was long and thick with curls, framing a face that made me think of apricots” (40). ** We directly get details about how Pieter looks.

Literary Terms Indirect Characterization – indirect hints and clues about a character; we make inferences about what a character is like by interpreting his actions, his statements, the statements or reactions of others Example from GPE: “Cornelia picked up a pebble and threw it across the road into the canal. There were long scratches up and down her arm – she must have been bothering the cat” (21). * We don’t get told directly that Cornelia is a pest, a girl who likes to stir up trouble, but we can look at the narrator’s observations of Cornelia’s actions as well as her comments and attitudes towards Griet and infer these actions.

Literary Terms Round character - a fully developed character; a three dimensional character who we get to see in many situations or from several angles; they seem complex like real human beings Example: the major characters Griet, Scout, Tony, or Haroun

Literary Terms Flat Character – a character who is not fully developed; a one- dimensional character who may seem more like a type of person or a stereotype than a real person Example: minor characters like Cornelia who we only see causing trouble or the nameless townspeople of Delft

Literary Terms Internal Conflict – A conflict within an individual (man vs. himself). External Conflict – A conflict with a force outside oneself (man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. society).

Literary Terms Climax– The high point or turning point of a conflict

Literary Terms Resolution – The wrapping up of loose ends in a story.

Literary Terms Symbol – An object that represents something other than itself, often used to convey meaning or theme.

Literary Terms Theme – The central message or meaning of a story.
