Journal: Do It Now  Get out your journal or spiral notebook.  Write today's date on the top line, on the right side.  Copy down today's prompt. Describe a time where you had to wait for something, either good or bad. Describe why you had to wait and how you felt while you were waiting.  Write at least six sentences about that topic. Write silently. If you have a question raise your hand and wait for Ms. Cox to come to you.

Objective: What are we doing today? Students will analyze the essential question “How do individuals persevere in the face of adversity?” through engaging in discussions about how individuals persevere in the face of adversity.

Agenda  Analyze the Essential Question  EQ Quick Write  First Read  Connecting the EQ to the Article – Conflict & Affects  Connecting the EQ to the Article – Overcoming Adversity  Formative Writing Task

Analyze the Essential Question How do individuals persevere in the face of adversity?

EQ Quick Write How do you think an individual overcomes adversity that is taking place within his or her society/culture?

First Read  Define it.  Explain it.  Determine efficacy.  Do it.

Connecting the EQ to the Article – Conflict & Affects  Second Read – Analyze  Teacher Modeling Watch carefully as Ms. Cox annotates the first section. Be sure to make these annotations on your copy to use as a model later.  Working Together – Table Groups Now, work with your table group to annotate the next section. Be sure to include everyone in the group.

Connecting the EQ to the Article – Overcoming Adversity  Go back to the Essential Question. Determine if we are able to answer the question when reading this article.  Annotating the Text – On Your Own Use the teacher model and your group work to help you annotate the last section. Focus on how individuals or society overcame this conflict/problem.

Formative Writing Task #1  Remember, Formative Writing Tasks count as quizzes. Use the grading rubric to help you write the best paragraph you can. In the article, “For the World’s Poor, Drinking Water Can Kill” by Addie Moorefoot, explain how an individual perseveres in the face of conflict/adversity. Use evidence from the article to support your response.

Review/Summary  Did we accomplish what we set out to do? Why or why not? Students will analyze the essential question “How do individuals persevere in the face of adversity?” through engaging in discussions about how individuals persevere in the face of adversity.  What, if anything, do we need to work on or practice more in order to ensure that you are able to complete the objective another day on your own?  Homework: Continue Word Ladders for this week.
