Social Hierarchy in the Chesapeake Tobacco was the basis of wealth & cause of social inequalities The owners of tobacco plantations Small farmers were the largest class; Came as indentured servants; most were very poor Indentured servants were often mistreated African slaves There were very few women

Social Unrest in the Chesapeake Bacon’s Rebellion -Challenge to Social Hierarchy (Loyalists v. Colonists) -Causes?  Land Restrictions  Protections from Natives  Taxation (sound familiar?) -Significance?  1 st instance of revolution  Move from servitude to slavery  Enforced hatred of Native Americans

Need for Labor Indentured Servitude Chance for New Opportunity Servitude was encouraged to assist in growing tobacco market Slavery Became easier as slaves become available and cheaper After Bacon’s Rebellion, loyalists wanted to ensure freemen could not upset social order Inferiority vs. Superiority based on Race

Northern Colonies/New England How did the Northern and Southern Colonies differ? Religious Order vs. Economic Reasoning What group pushed for religious tolerance? Massachusetts Bay Colony - Strict Roles and Beliefs - Belief in Education, for what purpose?

Population of the New England Colonies

Social Hierarchy in New England Local “elite” were religious leaders who ran town meetings Large population of small-scale farmers who were loyal to the local community Small population of landless laborers, servants, & poor Religion was the center of society

Middle Colonies New York - Settled by the Dutch, originally New Netherlands - ”Patroonships?” - Industry (lumber, textiles, shipbuilding, etc.) - Indentured Servitude > Slavery, why? Pennsylvania - William Penn & the Quakers - Society, Laws, and Economy - Relations with Native Americans?

Commonality Between Regions 1. All were eventually successful and profitable 2. All were based on the 3 original purposes of exploration 3. All fell under the rule of Great Britain, eventually!

Study Habits Most people suffer on exams, not because of lack of effort, but the inability to study correctly But like ice cream flavors, everyone has their preference on how to study. Suggestions:  Index Cards (colonial regions, people, cause/effects, etc.)  Timeline (Pre-Columbian America to 1754)  Annotate Notes & Handouts (I know, FUN!)  Consolidate Information & Notes via Organizer (venn diagram, t-chart, matrix, etc.)  Study Groups
