MICROSCOPE PROCEDURES

1. SET UP  Carry microscope with two hands  Place one hand on the base and the other hand on the arm  Place it 5 cm. from the edge of the desk  Take off cover, fold it, and place it in the center of the POD  Place cord through hole in desk  Plug in microscope

2. OPEN WIDE  Adjust the diaphragm so the largest opening is aligned with the stage’s aperture  The largest opening is #1  Align low power objective with body tube  Make sure the objective clicks into place

3. STAGE LIGHTS  Place slide on stage and secure it with stage clips  Position specimen over aperture  Turn on microscope

4. BRING LENS AND SLIDE TOGETHER  The low power objective should be aligned with the body tube  Looking at the stage at eye level, use the coarse adjustment knob to raise the stage all the way.

5. FOCUS  Looking through the eyepiece, use coarse adjustment knob and move stage downward to bring specimen into view.  Adjust slide to the center of the specimen.  If needed, use fine adjustment knob for sharpness and clarity.

6. MEDIUM POWER  While viewing stage at eye level, switch objective lens to medium power.  Focus (refer back to #5)

7. HIGH POWER  While viewing stage at eye level, switch objective to HIGH power. WARNING: ONLY USE FINE ADJUSTMENT KNOB TO FOCUS

8. NEXT SHOW LLower stage, using the coarse adjustment knob RReturn to low power objective lens CCarefully remove microscope slide PPosition next microscope slide onto the stage BBegin with #2 – Open wide

9. Return Microscope TTurn off the microscope LLower stage, using the coarse adjustment knob RReturn to low power objective lens CCarefully remove microscope slide CCarefully remove plug from outlet NNeatly fold up cord and secure with tie PPlace cover on top of microscope HHolding the microscope with two hands, walk slowly to cupboard and replace microscope
