Fracture to the 5 th metacarpal. Involves a break in the neck of the metacarpal. Anatomy

Caused by punching an object with a closed fist, such as a wall. Can also occur when the hand is not clenched and hits a hard object. Some doctors use the term "brawler's fracture" rather than "boxer's fracture" because a boxer is not likely to get this injury. Mechanism of Injury

Swelling Discoloration Bruises Pain Abnormal movement Misalignment of the associated finger Weakened grip Symptoms

X-rays and physical examination is needed to diagnose Boxer’s fracture. Splinting or casting is commonly used with Boxer’s fractures in order to immobilize the hand. Pain medication is sometimes prescribed, but over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be taken to reduce pain. Surgery is sometimes performed when the fracture is very severe. Physical therapy may be necessary for proper recovery. Treatment

Typically takes four to six weeks for the fracture to heal. People who have surgery take longer to recover. Heavy lifting, gripping, and contact sports should be avoided for three months. There are usually good results after recovery. Recovery
