Old Testament Survey: Book of 1 Chronicles Worship, Praise, Prayer and Glory

Background The name, “ Chronicles, ” given by Jerome in the fourth century AD, means diaries or annals. The Hebrew title is “ Words of the Days,” or “ Journals; ” today, we might say “ the events of the time.” First divided in the Septuagint Greek translation in the third century BC and given the name, “ Omissions,” or “ The Things Omitted.” “ Chronicles of Whole Sacred History.”

The text does not name the author or time of writing. According to the Jewish Talmud, Ezra was the author. Chronicles is similar to Ezra. Written from a priestly viewpoint Genealogies, temple worship, ministry of the priesthood, and obedience to God’s law Compare Ezra 1:1-3—2 Chronicles 36:22,23 Chronicles and Ezra may have been one continuous history, as were Luke and Acts. And give my son Solomon a loyal heart to keep Your commandments and Your testimonies and Your statutes...” Keys to 1 Chronicles

Key Chapter—17 God’s covenant with David is pivotal to Chronicles By the prophet Nathan, God established his throne forever – 17:13,14 “I will be his Father, and he shall be My son; and I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him who was before you. And I will establish him in My house and in My kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established forever.” Keys to 1 Chronicles

Key Chapter—17 Ultimately fulfilled in the reign of Christ, over His spiritual kingdom, the church David spoke further of this reign – Psalm 110:1-4 “Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; in the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth. The LORD has sworn and will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.’” Keys to 1 Chronicles

Key Chapter—17 Ultimately fulfilled in the reign of Christ, over His spiritual kingdom, the church Peter spoke this same truth in the beginning – Acts 2:29-36 “Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.” Keys to 1 Chronicles

Topics 1 Chronicles is a condensed Hebrew history--from Adam to Solomon. Primarily, a supplement to 2 Samuel. Chief topic is King David’s reign. – 17:19,20 “O LORD, for Your servant's sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. O LORD, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.”

1 Chronicles begins with the royal line of David and traces his righteous reign. God’s Sovereignty Worshipping and obediently serving Him – 3:1-3 “Now these were the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron: The firstborn was Amnon, by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second, Daniel, by Abigail the Carmelitess; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith…” Topics

The message of 1 Chronicles is that all men should learn from the history and examples recorded. Glory is due Him, and we worship His high and Holy name! – 13:10,11 “Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God. And David became angry because of the LORD'S outbreak against Uzza; therefore that place is called Perez Uzza to this day.” Message

Like the books of Samuel and Kings, which they supplement, I and 2 Chronicles were originally ONE book. Not just repetition; a divine editorial on the conduct and actions of God’s people. While 1 and 2 Kings give Israel’s political history, Chronicles gives insight into her spiritual and religious history. David’s dynasty in Judah Purpose

Outline of the Book Part 1: Chapters 1—9 = genealogies. Enabled determination of landowners so tribal territories could be restored after the Babylonian captivity. Part 2: Chapters 10—29 = Saul’s overthrow and death (10); King David’s reign. Much information about the temple and various wars.

Supplements the four previous books (1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings). Contains more info on the royal tribe-- Judah. Records many of the same events, but from a different vantage point The first four give historical facts; these two give spiritual and divine thoughts First four written from man’s viewpoint; the Chronicles books give God’s viewpoint.
