A Better Sanctuary & A Clean Conscience Heb 9:1-14 Hebrews – Lesson 9 A Better Sanctuary & A Clean Conscience Heb 9:1-14 Hebrews - Lesson 9

Review A Better Covenant Such are the promises of the New Covenant “I will put My laws in their mind” “They will all know Me” “I will remember their sins no more” When a MAN says he needs a new pair of shoes…….. The age of the law and the prophets has passed; the age of the Son is here Hebrews - Lesson 9 Hebrews - Lesson 9

The Tabernacle Hebrews - Lesson 9

Repetition from Author Hebrews Chapter 9 is another chapter contrasting the two Covenants Old vs. New It seems the recipients really wanted to hold on to the Tabernacle Hebrews - Lesson 9

The First Covenant Read Hebrews 9:1-5 Regulations of Divine Worship Earthly Sanctuary Trivia: What 3 items were in the Ark of the Covenant? Answer: Golden jar of Manna (Ex 16:32-36) Aaron’s rod that budded (Num 17:2-10) Tables of the covenant (I Kings 8:9) Hebrews - Lesson 9

* Not an actual photo Hebrews - Lesson 9

Various Kinds of Offerings Burnt – Bull, ram , or male bird - atonement for unintentional sin Grain – Worship, recognition of God’s goodness Fellowship - Any animal without defect - thanksgiving (included a communal meal) Sin - Animal based on status – forgiveness, cleansing, or confession Guilt - Ram or lamb – atonement for unintentional sin requiring restitution Hebrews - Lesson 9

Think 24 Hour Church Service Read Hebrews 9:6-7 Priests continually coming and going Running the tabernacle was extremely time consuming Why? When people felt convicted, overwhelmed, they came to find peace Peace from a GUILTY CONSCIENCE Hebrews - Lesson 9

High Priest Duty on Yom Kippur Verse 7 The first time he would carry the blood of a bull that had been sacrificed for him and his family Then the blood of the goat for the sins of the people. The high priest would lay his hands on the another goat and confess the sins of the nation over that goat. Then the goat would be driven out of the camp to symbolize the departure of sin from the camp of Israel. (Scapegoat) Hebrews - Lesson 9

Important Symbol Read Hebrews 9:8-10 What was the main problem? The sacrifices CANNOT cleanse the conscience Old Covenant was built on outward man not the inward man Conscience -to remember the sins that would separate the worshipper from God Hebrews - Lesson 9

Temple Scenario Man: Here is what I did Priest: You Blew It Man: Well, yeah I know that Priest: Well, offer a goat Man: I did Priest: You’re alright now Problem – The man would leave without a clean conscience Hebrews - Lesson 9

Back to Verse 8 “The way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed” This can be translated MANY different ways One commentator wrote… “you will never know the fullness and freedom of life in Christ if you are still going to the tabernacle to fix yourself. Until you understand that you have nothing of value to offer God, you will never get My grace and mercy” Hebrews - Lesson 9

Broken & Contrite ♥ Psalm 51:16 For you do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. Read Isaiah 29:13 (quoted by Jesus in Matt 15:8-9) We can sacrifice all that we want and we can obey all the regulations that we want, but in the end if our heart isn't changed, then we're no better off. The Bible contains 805 verses about the heart Hebrews - Lesson 9

The Achievement of Christ Read Hebrews 9:11-14 What was the REAL achievement? Access to God, the very thing lacking under the old covenant. Christ's entered into the heavenly sanctuary with his own blood. The sacrifice that accomplished eternal redemption!!!!!!!!! Hebrews - Lesson 9

Ashes of the Red Heifer 9:13 - … ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh Read Numbers 19:1-9 Repeated sacrifices of the goats, bulls, and red heifers The sacrifice of Christ, is a once and for all offering. Hebrews - Lesson 9

Lamb of God Read Heb 9:13 Blood of Jesus ashes of a heifer Provided temporary atonement blood of goats & bulls Purified the flesh ashes of a heifer Provided FINAL, ULTIMATE atonement (Redemption) Blood of Jesus Purifies the conscience Hebrews - Lesson 9

Blood of Jesus How does the blood of Jesus cleanse our conscience? It’s not that we’ve done better but that Christ did it all!!!!! Even the faith to believe was given to you by God so that no man may boast Read 1 Corinthians 1:29-31 Hebrews - Lesson 9

One Present Day Scenario Laying in bed at night your conscience/thoughts start gnawing at you You didn’t pray well today, you struggled with this, you can do so much better, you tend to be lazy, you did this, you didn’t do that, God can’t be pleased with me. That’s when you thank God for Jesus! When you become overwhelmed by the fact that Christ loves you as a dirty sinner, it’s the kindness that leads to true repentance And the conscience is cleaned Hebrews - Lesson 9

What did Jesus say……. Read Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28 God looks at our heart Rhetorical Question: Is an alcoholic free when he doesn’t drink but every fiber in his being is screaming for one? If your heart isn't fixed on God, you're not free. Hebrews - Lesson 9 Hebrews - Lesson 9

Summary Vs 14 …cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? “Serve” can also be translated worship. The blood of Christ purifies our conscience from dead works - the active violation of the will of God. Read 1 John 1:7 Hebrews - Lesson 9

Open the Way to God It is the kindness of Christ and the overwhelming gratitude that brings us to repentance. The atoning death of Christ gives us right relationship with God; it also provides the purification that enables authentic relationship with God. Hebrews - Lesson 9

Next Week’s Lesson Questions? Lesson 10 – A Better Sacrifice Heb 9:15-10:18 Questions? Hebrews - Lesson 9
