Two sides reach peace Nguyen Van Thieu- President of South Vietnam – He refused to allow Northern troops in the south

Nixon decided to start the “Christmas bombings” – American bombed North Vietnam for 12 days straight with B-52s – Only pausing on Christmas Day

After the U.S. North Vietnam returned to a peace agreement on January 27,1973 – “ending the war and restoring the peace in Vietnam” is what the agreement stated

The United States promised to withdraw troops and both sides agreed to exchange of prisoners of war. After 8 years of war, this was the longest war in American history

South Vietnam Falls When the United States were pulling out their troops South Vietnam`s peace treaty collapsed – March 1975, the North Vietnamese army launched a full-scale attack on the south – Thieu desperately appealed to the United States for help

Nixon showed support for the south and said we would launch an attack back – But Nixon pulled out under pressure, and the new president Ford took over

Ford asked for funds to aid South Vietnam – Congress refused to fund them On April 30 th NV captured Saigon the SV capital and NV was under communist rule.
