My Service Learning Project My students created holiday cards for the children in CHKD. They had to incorporate the gingerbread man and write the words “Happy Holidays”

Objective/ Transfer Goal Students will revisit the gingerbread man and the winter season Standard(s) of Learning Math: K11: students identify geometric figures (circle, triangle) English: K10: students will print first and last names K8: students will demonstrate comprehension of fiction- identify familiar stories Assessment They will decorate the card with a gingerbread based on what they have learned about the gingerbread man in the past weeks. They will also practice their writing skills by writing “Happy Holidays” on the card. Key Vocabulary/ Concepts The gingerbread man has three buttons, two eyes, and one nose. Practice writing. Materials Paper (pre-made cards) Crayons Cut-out gingerbread men Introduction (Hook) The students will watch a short video/song called 5 Little Gingerbread men (lying on a tray). Instructional Activities  Show the video 5 Little Gingerbread men (lying on a tray).  Briefly explain that we are making cards for children at CHKD (a hospital for children who are really sick and will not be able to go home with their family for the holidays).  Make a “class card” on the promethean board.  Explain the requirements for the cards (gingerbread man and “happy holidays”).  Hand out the pre-made cards and gingerbread men to the students.  Students create their cards.  Have the students all sit on the carpet and share their cards to one another. 5 Little Gingerbread Men (Lying on a Tray) This video was to grab their attention, but still relate it to the lesson.

The Beginning I briefly explained that the cards they would be making were going to children who were really sick and would not be able to go home and spend the holidays with their family.

Reaction After explaining who would receive their cards, my students asked a couple questions but generally understood. They were all really excited to have an opportunity to create their very own cards

We then created a card as a class on the Promethean board. My students LOVE using the Promethean board.

My students started with a blank piece of paper and a gingerbread man to draw on

Now it was time for the students to make their own!
