New York State Regents approved 28 learning standards in seven content areas. 1996

National Governor’s Association Proposes National Standards in ELA and Mathematics 2008

What are standards? What students should know & be able to do.
Based on three critical principals: Must be college and career ready Based on evidence A level of honesty about time
6 Major Shifts
In grades K – 5 50% of text should be informational
In grades % of reading should be informational texts.
Text Complexity Matters
Focus on questions that require that students pay attention to the text.
Student writing must demonstrate that they use evidence from the text to make a valid argument.
Academic Vocabulary
In K – 5, focus on fewer things done well.
In K – 2, Addition Subtraction The quantities they measure
In 3 – 5, Multiplication Division Fractions
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Student achievement expectations are based on the 2005 ELA and Mathematics Learning Standards and Core Curricula. Districts begin developing curricula aligned to CCSS (Jan. 2011) with a goal of implementing the new state curricula in Sept
