Tuesday, Sept. 25th Adding Fish

Do Now… Read (or re-read) the revision assignment. Underline things that might be helpful to you as you revise. You are being asked to re-focus and fairly deeply change your paper. In your own words, write what you are being asked to do in the revision. (use the back of the page if necessary)

Steps for Revision 1. Re-read your essay. Think about why you interpreted the way you did. 2. Develop a general theory of interpretation. Answer this question: According to my theory, Why do people interpret the way they do? 3. Work with Fish. How would he respond to your theory? 4. Friend/Enemy/”Frenemy”: Do you agree or disagree with what he’d say?

In the revision, you must refocus on a theory of interpretation.

Some options… Essay Format #1 – Block (Whole Essay) Intro: gives your theory of interpretation Give a Short summary Briefly Explain Interpretation What Fish would think of your interpretation. What do you think of Fish? Essay Format #2 – Point by Point (Paragraph) Topic Sentence: Your theory of Interpretation Key line from your interpretation Here’s what Fish would say about it Here’s what I would say Do we agree or disagree?

Keywords Choose one keyword. Explain what this word or phrase means in terms of Fish’s theory. Use your own words; use examples if you can! Recipe “X-seeing eyes” Interpretive Strategies Decode (vs. make) Context/Frame Shared ways of seeing Interpretive communities Culture Constructing “Doing studenting” Culturally Derived Subjective & Objective Individual/idiosyncratic Communal/conventional Institution Institutional norms

Find Your Group! 5:30 pm Ryan, Ram & Jake James, TJ & Dan Taylor, Leo & Tom Jesse, Dongeun & Suli Abi, Justin, & Jasmin

Read, Talk & Write Together: What is this student’s claim about interpretation? What would Fish say about this claim? Use his key words /phrases to explain what you think might be his point of view. Explain why you think Fish would believe this. If you have time, find a quote to back up your ideas. Write down all of your answers

Homework: Peer Review / Grading The peer review asks you to look at the same things I look at when I grade: Does the essay fulfill the assignment? Does it have a strong main idea? Is the idea developed and supported? 1. Read the peer review, then put your name by the word “author” on both your peer review sheets. 2. Put one review on each copy of your paper. 3. Pass one copy of your paper to each of your partners. 4. Write your name again next to the word “Reviewer” on the sheets you received.

My Comments Here are some symbols I use when I comment: Sp= spelling _?_ = I don’t understand = wrong word/spell checker mistake Just like you, I sometimes underline important ideas and summarize your ideas in the margins. Look everywhere for comments – backs of pages, on your comments, etc. Generally, my comments fall into three categories: QUESTIONS ? POSITIVE + SUGGESTIONS ∧
