Mendel’s principles form the basis of the modern science of genetics. The inheritance of biological characteristics is determined by individual units called genes. Genes are passed from parents to their offspring.

In cases in which two or more forms (alleles) of the gene for a single trait exist, some forms of the gene may be dominant and others may be recessive. In most sexually reproducing organisms, each adult has two copies of each gene. These genes are segregated from each other when gametes are formed. The alleles for different genes usually segregate independently of one another.

There are exceptions to most of Mendel’s principles. All genes do not show simple patterns of dominant or recessive alleles.

Cases in which one allele is not completely dominant over another are called incomplete dominance. In this case, the heterozygous phenotype looks like a blending of the two homozygous phenotypes.

Interestingly enough, the Poofkin flowers display incomplete dominance in their genes for color. 1.
