Chapter 14 I have to have…

Last Week: Review You used “I need to be able to + verb.” to talk about skills for jobs. ex. A teacher needs to be able to communicate well. Practiced “I can + verb” and “I am good at + verb+ing” and their negatives. ex. I can sing. I can’t sing. // I am good at singing. I am not good at singing. Discussed what skills are needed in several jobs.

This Week You will continue to talk about jobs. You will identify vocabulary that relates to various jobs. You will make a list tools that are used in various jobs, particularly tools that you may need in your future occupation. You will practice the sentence structures “I will need + noun.” “I will have to have + noun.” You will practice using articles such as some, many, much, a lot of, lots of, and a few before nouns. You will practice using count, non-count and abstract nouns. You will use a dictionary to look up the proper English names of tools that you are likely to use both in your training at school and after you graduate.

Learning Objectives After this lesson, students will be able to express necessity and lack of necessity in a variety of situations. identify tools they will need in their future occupations. use the proper English word when talking about tools used in their field of study. distinguish the difference in the use of count, non-count and abstract nouns.

Expressing Necessity Last week you used “I need to be able to do ST.” to talk about skills needed for certain jobs. Last week, you practiced talking about skills that people need for their jobs. Today, we are going to use nouns to talk about things people need. The sentence you will be using is I have to have st and I need to have st. For example, what do you have to have when you come to class? You have to have your textbook. You need to have a pencil. You also need to have a notebook so you can take notes and do some of the group work. So as you can see, the something that is needed is a noun—not a verb.

What do you have to have…? What do you have to have if you want to drive a car? You have to have a driver’s license. You need to have a driver’s license. What do you have to have if you want to go to the movie? You have to have a ticket. You need to have a ticket. What do you have to have if you want to buy a new car? You have to have lots of money. You need to have lots of money. What do you have to have if you want to go abroad? You have to have a passport. You need to have a passport.

Activity : In Groups of 3~4 In the table there are 3 jobs; professor, journalist and graphic artist. In groups, work together to make a list of tools that each job would need. For example, a doctor needs an office where his patients can come when they are sick. List at least three things that each job would require. ProfessorJournalist Graphic Artist

What do I need to do my job? As a teacher, there are things that I have to have in order to do my job. You now have to ask me if I need ST to do my job. (You must fill in the blank in order to ask the question?) The question form is “Do you have to have + noun to do your job?” Each student must ask one question. No two students can ask the same question. You have 3 minutes to work with your group to form questions. One question for each student.

What about your future job? What do you need? I will ask, Will you have to have this? You will answer Yes. I will have to have that (those). Or No. I will not need that (those).

Will you need these? Yes. I will have to have those.No. I will not need those.

Will you need this? Yes. I will have to have that. No. I will not need that.

Will you need these? Yes. I will have to have those. No. I will not need those.

Will you need these? Yes. I will have to have those. No. I will not need those.

Will you need these? Yes. I will have to have those. No. I will not need those.

Will you need this? Yes. I will have to have that. No. I will not need that.

Will you need these? Yes. I will have to have those. No. I will not need those.

Will you need this? Yes. I will have to have that. No. I will not need that.

Will you need these? Yes. I will have to have that. No. I will not need that.

What is the English?

Group Work Work in groups and find the English names for the items you have to have for your future job. If you will need the tools, be prepared to use the following sentences. I will have to have + noun in my future job. As a ______ I will need to have + noun. If you will not need the tools, be prepared to use the following sentences. I will not have to have + noun in my future job. As a ______ I will not need + noun.

We have finished chapter 14. You should not be able to talk about things you need using I will need + noun and things you don’t need using I will not need + noun. Please do homework chapter 14. The End Thank you.
