Out of My Mind: Postcard Project

Finding Your Voice In the novel, Melody struggles to make her voice heard and to get others to see her for who she really is. All of us are misunderstood at times and will need the courage to make our voices heard. Consider how you will express yourself this year so that others may know you? How will you be heard?

Essential Question: How will you make your voice heard this year? Product: You will address a postcard to yourself that describes your plan for finding your voice this year. You can describe who you are and how you want to be understood. What voice do you want everyone to hear? I will mail this postcard to you during your last week of school and we can discuss whether you met your goal.

BRAINSTORM  List some possible ideas with a partner (4-6).  What are you good at? Sports? Music? Academics?  What do you love doing? The same as above?  Describe the voice you want others to hear?  Is it the voice of a leader among your peers?  Is it the voice of a team player who can be counted on?  Is it the voice of an independent person who dances to the beat of his or her own drum?  Identify some possible obstacles to being heard and ways to overcome them (at least 2).  Describe your plan to develop your unique voice this year.

On the postcard:  Record the goal.  Describe your plan.  Illustrate the front.  Address the postcard.

Sample Stamp Your Address: John Smith 172 Winston Avenue Aston, PA __________ Goal: I will find my voice by making myself a leader on the baseball team. My plan: 1.Show commitment: attend all practices and give my all. 2.Inspire others: motivate my teammates to excel through encouragement. 3.Show confidence on and off the field so that others will see me as a leader.
