Notes le premier février L’euro (The euro) The euro is the unit of currency used by 17 countries in the European Union (EU). The symbol for the euro is €. The value of the euro fluctuates against the US dollar. Today one euro is worth about $1.35 US, but has been worth as much as $1.60 US within the last few years.

The European Union adopted the euro in 1999, but bills and coins didn’t come into circulation until Jan. 1st, The euro was created in order to make economic transactions simpler within the European Union. Not all countries in the European Union have adopted the euro. The United Kingdom, for example, is an EU member, but still uses the British pound.
