Romans How Does God Save Us? Thesis: The righteous shall live by faith 1:17 Overview: Humanity’s problemGod’s solution 1:18-3:20 3:21-8:39 Humanity’s problem: Nobody treats God as he deserves 1:21 Bad gentiles don’t: sexual impurity and worship of things 1:22-32 Good gentiles don’t: Nobody lives up to his own standards 2:1 Jews don’t: They have God’s law but they break it 2:23 The Bible backs up this experience: All have sinned 3:9-20 God’s solution: Humanity’s problem makes a problem for God. He wants to save them, but he must uphold his law 3:26 God’s solution to this problem is to present Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, so all who have faith in his blood will be saved 3:25 How does it work? (First, remember that this is nothing new. God saved Abraham by faith.) It works this way:

sin --> death but obedience --> righteousness 5:12, AdamChrist SI N OBEDIEN CE You

When we are baptized, we die with Christ 6:3

Since we share his death we will share his resurrection 6:3

Since we share his death we are dead to the Law, since the Law does not apply to dead people 7:4 Even though the Law does not apply to us, we keep it in spirit because we really love God, and we really love what God loves—our neighbor. 3:31
