What is Eco-schools? Jamie Eco-schools is a program that helps to educate children in schools about how they can help their school and benefit the environment. We enjoy taking part in Eco-schools as we are given the opportunity to: Participate in various projects on waste, recycling, litter, energy and biodiversity. Talk to our friends in assemblies. Update the college website/send photos to local papers. Michael McIvor
What does our Eco-team do? Jamie What does our Eco-team do? Our Eco-team: Empties the blue bins in the class rooms during PSHE. We do litter picks around the school. We collect and recycle old ink cartridges, mobile phones and textiles. We help environmental charities, such as Camara to send computers to Africa.

Recycling: Recycool Lucy We packed the mobile phones – 28 in total and 14 ink cartridges and arranged a courier for collection.
Reprographics Lucy Amber and Ryan informed Miss Carey about the advantages of printing doubled sided.
Recycling paper – blue bins Laura Recycling paper – blue bins Recycling costs less - up to 80% of normal waste disposal costs. Recycling one tonne of paper saves 17 trees. In one tonne there is 1000 kilograms = 1176 litres. That means for every 69 litres of paper recycled - one tree is saved. Every week the Eco-team empties 54 blue bins. Each bin contains 50 litres. (54 bins x 50 litres = 2700 litres). This means 39 trees are saved every week. (2700 litres / 69 litres = 39 trees saved)
Recyco Waste – Black bins Odhran Recyco Waste – Black bins We met with Mr McGirr from Recyco Waste. The College signed an agreement which means all black bin rubbish is now recycled. By the end of next year it is hoped 100% of all waste will be converted to Refuse Derived Fuel which will be used as a substitute for fossil fuel in power stations. Waste will no longer be dumped in landfill sites.
Litter: Spring Clean Odhran This year we collected 40 rubbish bags. We collected litter all over the College. We worked in pairs, wore rubber gloves and used special equipment.
