Libraries?

Find everything you need.. Consult CERN Document Server: ( and find: –Online preprints and articles –Books and e-books –Conference proceedings and e-conference proceedings –Journals and e-journals –Standards and e-standards –Dictionaries/encyclopaedias and online dictionaries and encyclopaedias –Multimedia documents: videos, photos –…–…

With the Library, you can: Read night and day! Borrow books (and request them from your desk with CDS!) –New books every week (have a look on the screen in the “Pas perdus”!) –We order books and other documents from external Libraries in case we don’t have them here Borrow standards or buy them Buy books and software in the CERN Bookshop Use the scan-to-mail machine Ask the Librarians and challenge them! … Remember, the service is there for everyone, not only physicists!

What you can do for us We rely on you … –We operate openly but on trust Share your information –Submit your documents (reports / conference papers / articles etc) to CERN Document Server –Donate books you no longer need Suggest purchases for the Library collection Spread the word!

The scientific information flow

Open Access policy CERN rules say you should submit your documents to CDS (O.C. no.6). If not, even CERN staff might not have access to your publications 50 years old CERN reports can still not be scanned because the publisher owns the copyright… Self-archive your articles (preprints/conference submissions etc) in CDS – –Use the submit button and “CERN Open Document” for most of your submissions The LHC-era will see a publishing reform –SCOAP 3 : a new publishing model for particle physics and ensure open access: –See the DG’s slides on open access DG’s slides on open access –Other domains could follow soon
