WHICH INSTRUMENT SHOULD I PLAY? WHO AM I? WHERE DO I LIVE? WHO LIVES WITH ME? DO I ALREADY HAVE AN INSTRUMENT AT HOME?

THE WOODWINDS HAVE BEEN OR ARE CURRENTLY MADE OF WOOD. THE AIR THAT IS PUSHED THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT CREATES THE SOUND.

THE FLUTE IS AN INSTRUMENT THAT IS NOW MADE OF METAL BUT USED TO BE MADE OF WOOD. IT IS THE ONLY INSTRUMENT THAT IS HELD TO THE SIDE (TRANSVERSE) THE FLUTE

MANY CLARINETS ARE NOW MADE OF PLASTIC, BUT SOME ARE STILL MADE OF EBONITE (A TYPE OF WOOD) USES A REED TO PRODUCE THE SOUND. THE CLARINET

“NEW” INSTRUMENT INVENTED BY ADOLPH SAX. THE ONLY WOOD ON THIS INSTRUMENT IS THE REED, THE BODY OF THE INSTRUMENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MADE OF METAL. THE SAXOPHONE

BRASS INSTRUMENTS MADE OF METAL (BRASS) USE A MOUTHPIECE THAT CREATES A SOUND WHEN IT IS BUZZED THROUGH. A GOOD EAR IS HELPFUL WHEN PLAYING A BRASS INSTRUMENT.

THE TRUMPET USES VALVES INSTEAD OF KEYS TO CHANGE FROM NOTE TO NOTE. ONE FINGERING ON THE TRUMPET CAN PRODUCE 3 OR MORE DIFFERENT NOTES OR PITCHES. THE TRUMPET

THE TROMBONE USES NO KEYS OR VALVES TO PRODUCE NOTES. INSTEAD IT USES A SLIDE TO CHANGE FROM NOTE TO NOTE. THERE ARE 7 POSITIONS ON A TROMBONE THAT CREATE ALL OF THE NOTES THAT IT CAN PLAY. THE TROMBONE

STRINGS (offered at Toquam ONLY) THIS GROUP IS MADE UP OF INSTRUMENTS THAT PRODUCE A SOUND WITH STRINGS GUITAR, VIOLIN, AND PIANO (YES PIANO!) ARE EXAMPLES OF STRINGED INSTRUMENTS

PRODUCES A SOUND BY PULLING A BOW ACROSS THE STRINGS A NEW NOTE IS PLAYED BY PRESSING ON DIFFERENT PARTS OF EACH STRING THE VIOLN

PERCUSSION ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN HIT, SCRAPE OR SHAKE CAN BE CONSIDERED A PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT. ONE OF THE OLDEST MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.

PERCUSSION INVOLVES MORE THAN JUST SNARE DRUMS AND BASS DRUMS. THERE ARE MANY MORE “AUXILLIARY” INSTRUMENTS THAT BELONG TO THE PERCUSSION FAMILY. PERCUSSION

AUXILIARY PERCUSSION THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF AUXILIARY PERCUSSION THAT ARE USED IN A BAND. EACH OF THEM ARE AS IMPORTANT AS THE SNARE AND BASS DRUMS. CYMBALS TAMBOURINE TRIANGLE MARACAS GUIRO COW BELL
