END THE R-word Alison Lucey Annette Bergesen Lisa Palmer

End the R-word movement is…   A campaign to ask people to pledge to stop saying the R- word   Helping to bring awareness to people   Learning to use appropriate words   Honestly, they are just people like you and I; so why do they have to have a particular title   A campaign to elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities

End the R-word means…   Retard or retarded are synonyms for “dumb” or “stupid”. That implies that people with intellectual disabilities are less valued and looked upon as “stupid”   You need to be aware of the derogatory remarks you are making and the words you are using   Do NOT use the R-word to describe anyone   The R-word, "retard," is slang for the term mental retardation.

The R-word effects…   EVERYONE!!!!!

End the R-word movement is happening because…   The R-word is hurtful   Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. It is hurtful, offensive, and derogatory   The R-word is degrading to those with intellectual disabilities   To build awareness of the impact the R-word has   It has became a societal norm to use the word when speaking about others with disabilities
