The College at Brockport CELT - Teaching Green Results from the College lab printing policy Jeffrey S. Smith, MPA Athi Georgiou 4/7/2011
How it all started… Printing policy was approved by the College Technology Council in April 2008 Implemented Fall 2010 – most of delay was developing a way to purchase additional printing beyond the quota. Communication/Marketing plan began in Spring 2010 Printing Quota Committee created Printing web page created Published Daily Eagle/Stylus articles Pop up messages on all lab computers at the beginning of the semester Tent cards created and placed in labs Top-up cards created
The public’s reaction? Expectation: a backlash from students and faculty If we have 7,000 students, and only 10% complain, we would expect 700 complaints Reality: a few bumps, but overall, a smooth transition Immediate coverage from the Stylus Students used the topic as a class project (see video)(see video)
The result:
More results: Comparing the this academic year to the same time period last year, we are seeing a 48% reduction in the amout of printing done in the labs 2,836,252 fewer prints (48% reduction) coming from 436,563 fewer print jobs (a 41% reduction) As of 4/6/11, $5,150 of additional printing purchased ($4,825 via payment gateway (93.7%), $325 (6.3%) via top up card)
Comparing top users (protecting the actual identities) Top 5 print users last year at this point in time 7,654 7,462 7,135 6,446 6,171 Top 5 print users this year at this point in time 2,880 (+$125) 2,619 (+$115) 2,240 (+$85) 2,031 (+$45) 2,007 (+$75)
Overall outcomes: The printing policy has worked. The College has printed millions fewer pages since the quota’s implementation in Fall Students are far more aware of their printing habits. (cautious of wasteful printing) High use students have the ability to pay, like a luxury tax, therefore not punishing the majority of the students. One student has already purchased $125 in extra printing so far
How can faculty help? These were suggestions from students: Be aware of the quota Consider allowing laptop and other mobile devices in the classroom. Offer students the option to hand in double-sided/single line spaced papers Accessing more readings/homework assignments on Angel. Allowing students to hand in assignments electronically.
