WFTO Guarantee System (GS)

The Principles WFTO has ten Principles that are the foundation of the Guarantee System. These have been worked out over the years with the WFTO membership. Any changes to the Principles require AGM agreement. The Standard The WFTO Fair Trade Standard is part of the WFTO Guarantee System, focusing on the management and operation of WFTO member organisations in relation to their Fair Trade practices. It comprises a set of compliance criteria based on the WFTO Principles and International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions The Self Assessment Report Trading members are required to evaluate themselves to assess their practice against the Standard and produce a Self Assessment Report (SAR) every 2 years. New applicants also need to do a self assessment before becoming full members.

Self Assessment Report & Requirements The WFTO Fair Trade Standard 10 Principles of Fair Trade

10 Principles Short overview of what in means to be Fair Trade Standard An explanation of what this means in the daily working of an organisation in the form of Compliance Criteria Self Assessment Report Requirements that bring out the information needed to check if an organisations complies with the Principles

Principle 1 Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers Poverty reduction through trade forms a key part of the organisation’s aims. The organisation supports marginalised small producers, whether these are independent family businesses, or grouped in associations or co-operatives. It seeks to enable them to move from income insecurity and poverty to social and economic empowerment. The organisation has a plan of action to carry this out.
