Internet Started as a result of a cold-war motivated DARPA project in the 1960-s. WWW is one application that runs on the internet, and allows us to access data via web servers , ftp (file transfer protocol), usenet (news groups, now largely replaced by forums) are the other aspect URL: protocol://machinename.domain_name IP Address: 4 numbers between each. How many IP addresses possible? 255*255*255*255 = 4.22 billion We are running out of them. Estimated time: Need to switch to IPV6, has 2 X 10^128 addresses. BUT the 2 use different network protocols. May take up to 10 years to run the 2 side by side

Internet DNS: translates URLs to IP addresses. NextCard: Turns out that it cost a lot to recruit customers online and there were many who were deadbeats, so Nextcard was liquidated in Source: HTML: Has fixed tags that describe how to display the text/images XML: We can define our own tags and specify a document structure (in essence the list of permissible tags) so that each page in XML conforms to that tag. XML allows data sharing between different databases, simply by defining the document structure. Example:

Basic Web Model Database (DBMS) PHP/Java Servlets/ ASP.net/JSP/CGI Web Browser HTMLSQL calls via driver SERVER SIDE E.g. Server: LAMP (Linux Apache MYSQL PHP) CLIENT SIDE

Business To Consumer B2C: Primarily through websites and auction sites Websites use cookies to personalize options. Discussion: -should we build and maintain our own website or -should we use a consultant like Amazon or yahoo to setup a webstore, or -should we use a channel like ebay to sell our items to customers? User experience at website and search capabilities of website are very important. Search engine marketing is very important. What about new middlemen: recommender systems( Search engines marketing ( E-tailers carrying durables (

Miscellaneous Topics B2B: Much larger than B2C. We’ll discuss more in next meeting C2C: Auction sites, online classifieds, user feedback is important. Ebay is C2C, B2C and B2B. Mobile: Number of smart phones versus computers Mobile access to web applications. E.g., Google’s phone. Discussion: How is the internet changing the business models of -authoring books -music -movies? How is ecommerce changing organizational methods of forming teams?
