Building the Capacity of Smallholder Farmers in Uganda Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security 29 October 2015

To Successfully Tackle Hunger and Food Insecurity in Africa, Farmers’ Potential Must be Unlocked Helping Farmers Eliminate Post-Harvest Losses is a Key Step

95% of all research investments in the past 30 years have focused on increasing farming productivity - only 5% on reducing post-harvest losses! Increasing farmer productivity is critical, but the first priority (the foundation for food security) must be improving handling and storage practices at the farm level. Improved Seeds and Fertilizers Improved Herbicides &. Pesticides ImprovedEquipment Improved Irrigation >40% Why Post-Harvest Losses? Plugging the Leaky Bucket

The quantity, quality, and economic value of crops can be preserved by intervening at the household level, the very start of the logistics supply chain. Optimizing the Supply Chain to Reduce Hunger and Increase Market Access

WFP’s Post-Harvest Loss Reduction Approach Farmer Capacity Development (Post- Harvest Management Training) Improved Equipment (Handling, Drying, and Storage) Increased Support (Field and Marketing)

Farmer Training and Post-Harvest Storage is Key to Raising Local Food Security and Incomes Proven storage solutions help guard against insects, pests, moisture, and mould.

Improved Post-Harvest Handling Techniques and Technology = Improved Nutrition

Empowering Women

Tried and true post-harvest storage technologies can better the futures of millions of smallholder farms, in Africa, and globally. The Opportunity to Replicate this Success on a Large Scale

Our Vision is to take one small step closer towards achieving Zero Hunger in our lifetime. Eliminating Post-Harvest Losses will help Secure Africa’s Future
