Group 1: June-July report date March 17, 2012 –Date for submission of data for maximum # of points toward Keppel award The Francis Keppel Award is named after a distinguished U.S. Commissioner of Education who served from 1962 to He was also a well-known member of the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science from 1978 to Francis Keppel was an early and enthusiastic advocate of reliable and regularly reported national, State, and local library statistics that would provide a basis for public policy formulation and the improvement of library services for the entire spectrum of the U.S. population.

March – April and spring March-April, 2012 –Vote with state librarian for new and revised data elements proposed in previous year’s (Dec.) annual conference April, 2012 –Submit 2011 data to Census (via WebPlus) by final date of April 14, 2012 –Publish library statistics for state (paper and/or electronically)

April - June Publicize and explain to public library staff any new/revised elements that SDCs voted to collect Revise annual report form to add new/revised national and state data

May - August Census Bureau –Edit follow-ups (usually give 2 weeks) –May involve contacting libraries for explanation for out-of-range data Annual report transmitted to public libraries –Paper or electronic –Prioritize other duties, in order to explain/assist libraries

September – November Data elements –Solicit new/revised data element proposals from public library/state library agency colleagues –Submit proposals to IMLS for new or revised data elements Finish receiving all reports Preliminary 2012 data review

December - ongoing Receive WebPLUS User’s Guide from Census Continue to review 2012 statistics from public libraries Attend SDC annual conference –Make changes to annual report form based on discussions of proposed elements –Brief state librarian on conference
