I. Napoleon Rises to Power 20 year old lieutenant when the revolution broke out Won a series of victories vs. the Hapsburgs and others 1799 overthrew the Directory set up 3 man governing board known as the Consulate Appointed himself consul for life
I. Napoleon Rises to Power cont. In 1804 he names himself Emperor of the French Napoleon held votes called plebiscites at each step in his rise to power Napoleon still had absolute power This is referred to as democratic despotism
