Types of Equations

“The background” There are 5 types of equations. They can be related to an analogy. The analogy is of a BIG dance, like the Prom or Homecoming. People make big plans and find dates and Buy some serious outfits for both of these events. Dinner must be had and flowers, etc.

The Story: In this situation, Unfortunately Jack and Jill don’t have dates and decide to go to the dance by themselves. The slow song comes on and all people who came as couples make their way to the dance floor. There’s Jack leaning on the wall trying to look cool and Jill is over to the other side giggling with her friends, neither one came with dates. For whatever reason, Jack and Jill’s eyes meet and it is like stars appeared... Jack approaches the other side of the room and asks Jill to dance and they decide to go dance. So they become a couple on the dance floor.

#1 Dance in equation form: Jack + Jill → Jack/Jill Called: Synthesis or Combination Identifier Choices Equation Choices

The Story: OK, so during this slow song while Jack and Jill are dancing – remember they just met and did not come as a dating couple (Jack just asked her to dance a minute ago), Jill starts talking nonstop about... Oh I don’t know, maybe about getting married or something equally scary, and Jack can’t handle it. So he says something really rude. Jill storms off leaving Jack standing in the middle of the dance floor wondering what just happened.

#2 Dance in Equation form: Jack/Jill → Jack + Jill Called: Decomposition Identifier Choices Equation Choices

The Story: So during the same song – it’s really long – John and Jane who came together on a date and have matching outfits and flowers, etc. are dancing. Over John’s shoulder Jane is making eyes at Mike, who has no date. Mike decides to try his luck, he comes up to the dancing couple, taps John on the shoulder and steals Jane away. Now John is left standing on the dance floor with out a date.

#3 Dance in Equation form: John/Jane + Mike → Mike/Jane + John Called: Single displacement or Single replacement Identifier Choices Equation Choices

The Story: This is still the 1st slow song, it never ends, and lots of couples are still dancing. The tempo of the music picks up and everyone is dancing faster, but still as couples. Brian and Maggie are a couple and so are Sue and Bob. Some how, one of the couples trips over something and goes flying into the other couple. No one falls, but after the dust clears, both couples have switched dancing partners. So now Brian and Sue are dancing and Bob and Maggie are dancing.

#4 Dance in Equation form: Brian/Maggie + Bob/Sue → Bob/Maggie + Brian/Sue Called: Double displacement or double replacement Identifier Choices Equation Choices

#5 Doesn’t have a story. Equation form: Called:Combustion This reaction has Products of ONLY Water and Carbon dioxide Identifier Choices Equation Choices

Pick the identifier that matches the equation. Each identifier is used ONLY once for all 5 types. Choose: Two compound switching - Likes replace likes Products of CO 2 and H 2 O ONLY 1 element switching in - Likes replace likes 1 product only 1 reactant only Back 1Back 2Back 3Back 4Back 5

Pick one Real Chemistry equation to match the type. Each equation is used ONLY once for all 5 types. Choose: 2 NaCl 2 + F 2 → 2 NaF 2 + Cl 2 2 KClO 3 → 2 KCl + 3 O 2 N H 2 → 2 NH 3 C 6 H 12 O O 2 → 6 CO H 2 O 2 AgNO 3 + MgCl 2 → 2 AgCl + Mg(NO 3 ) 2 Back 1Back 2Back 3Back 4Back 1Back 2Back 3Back 4 Back 5Back 5
