Waterproof Objects Can you think of any objects that need to be waterproof? Umbrella Goggles Windows
Teddy’s House Hi, I’m teddy! My friends and I are building some houses, but we haven't finished yet. We still need to add the roofs. Can you help us decide what materials we should use?
Teddy has asked us to do a very important job – to be his architect. An architect is someone who designs buildings. They need to know lots about materials and their properties, so that they can choose the right materials to use.
Choosing a Materials for the Roof What properties would a material need to have for it to be suitable for a roof? Property Why this property is helpful Strong So that it does not break easily Waterproof So that it keeps the rain out. Light So that the walls can support it.
Choosing a Materials for the Roof Teddy has given us his unfinished houses. We need to test the materials that we have to see which one would make the best roof. We need to record our findings, so that we can show them to teddy and his friends.
Being a Scientist As well as being architects, we are also being ‘scientists’. Check us out! All scientists do things in the same way. They: Decide on an aim (what they want to find out) Make a prediction (what they think will be the right answer) Decide how to test their prediction (a method) Test their predictions (by investigating) Record what happens (their results) Come to a conclusions (see what they found out)
Deciding on an Aim Teddy has given us our aim for today. Can you remember what teddy wanted us to find out? He wanted us to find out which material would make the best roof for the houses!
Making a Prediction Making a prediction means saying what you think will happen. We should always try to give a reason for our predictions, so we use the word ‘because’. I predict that…………. because………………………..
method The method means how we plan to test our prediction; We have to try and plan to do a fair test, so that we find out the correct answer. I will help you to understand what a fair test means.
Investigating Investigating means testing our idea to see if we were right. We have to try and stick to the method, especially the bit about making a fair test.
results Our results means what we found out when we did our investigating. Scientists often record their results in a results table or by drawing. I have given you a results table to complete.
Conclusion Our conclusion means what we found out when we did our investigating. Today, our conclusion will help Teddy to know which materials to use for the roofs. So lets get started!
