1 Math CAMPPP 2011 Pursuing Broader Perspectives Proportional Reasoning Breakout # 2

Please sit with your course partner from yesterday’s Venn Diagram activity.

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Learning Goals: Recognize the importance of clearly identifying: –What we want students to know (learning goal). –How we will know that they learned it (consolidating question). Practice designing lesson frameworks by starting with learning goals and consolidating question(s). Explore proportional reasoning concepts in curriculum documents and link to Big Ideas. Give and receive effective professional feedback. 33

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Minds On ~ 5 minutes Read the article “The House” individually. Underline what you consider to be the important information in the article. 44

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Minds On ~ 5 minutes Re-read the article “The House” individually using the information on the orange slip as your lens. Highlight what you consider to be the important information in the article. 55

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Minds On ~ 5 minutes What are the TOP 3 key features of the house – based on your lens. Come to consensus at your table. Be prepared to share and justify. 66

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Minds On ~ 5 minutes Whole Group Share the ‘lens’ that your table was assigned. Share your TOP 3 key features of the house with justification. SUMMARIZE How does this activity relate to building Learning Goals and Consolidating Questions? 77

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Action ~ 10 minutes Whole Group The Big Ideas and Proportional Reasoning K-12 resource on EduGAINS provides us with samples of how to create and connect Big Ideas, Curriculum Expectations, Learning Goals and Consolidation Questions Math GAINS →Continuum and Connections → Big Ideas and Proportional Reasoning K Let’s take a look together!

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Action ~ 15 minutes Pairs Get materials you will need: Chart Paper, Markers, Curriculum Document (hardcopy or online), access to EduGAINS Find a space to work. 99

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Action ~ 15 minutes (continued) ACTIVITY: You are designing the framework for a lesson: 1.Find an expectation (or cluster of expectations) that addresses proportional reasoning in the course you have chosen. 2.On the chart paper, record: The course code and the curriculum expectation(s) in words. The learning goal you would have for your students. The consolidating question(s). What will a good answer look like? Identify the Big Idea as found in the Proportional Reasoning document that fits with your expectation. 3.We will be looking for volunteers to post their work and receive feedback from the group. (Keep in mind as you work.) 10

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Action ~ 15 minutes Gallery Walk - We will view 2-3 pieces of work as a group and provide feedback using these guiding questions: Is the learning goal clear? Does it relate back to the Curriculum Expectation? (too much, too little) Will the Consolidation Question provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate that they have achieved the Learning Goal? Volunteers? (Remember – Effective Feedback poster) 11

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Consolidate ~ 10 minutes Whole Group - Guiding Questions to Discuss What do you see as the important differences between the curriculum expectation and the learning goal? Why is it important to make this distinction? 12

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Consolidate ~ 10 minutes Guiding Questions to Discuss Would you always state the learning goal at the beginning of the lesson? Why/why not? What do you consider to be the characteristics of a good consolidating question? 13

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 2 Consolidate ~ 5 minutes Perspective Passport / Math Map Individually reflect on your learning and next steps. Record in your Passport or on your Math Map. 14
