Building Blocks for Life: Being a Servant

Defined A servant is “one that serves others” or “a person who performs duties for others.”

Memory Verses The memory verses for this lesson come from the words of Jesus and the writings of John (Matt. 20:26-28; 1 John 3:17-18).

Matthew 20:26-28, NASB Jesus said, “It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

1 John 3:17-18, NASB John said, “But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.”

Positive Examples Jesus Dorcas & Phoebe

Application How can I evidence the heart of a servant at church? at home? at play? at school?

Conclusion & Challenge Do I have the attitude of Jesus who is described as God’s servant (Acts 3:13- 15)? Am I single-minded in my devotion to God (Luke 16:13)? Am I a servant of righteousness or a slave of sin (Rom. 6:16-18)?
