TRAVEL IN ALABAMA - MVM Prior to 1998, travel increased at a rate of 3.1% per year. From 1998 to 2007 travel increased by 1.2% per year followed by a decline in Since 2011, traffic has remained flat. From 1993 to 2013, the total increase in travel was 37.4%.

FUEL CONSUMPTION From 1993 to 2007 fuel use increased by 1.3% per year, followed by a decline in From 1993 to 2013, fuel use increased by 18.7%. Over the last 20 years, travel increased by 37.4%, however, fuel consumption increased by only 18.7%.

FACTS ABOUT THE ALABAMA’S FUEL TAX  Last state gasoline tax increase was in  If the State 18¢ per gallon gasoline tax were adjusted for inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the tax would be increased by 12¢ to 30¢ per gallon. NOTE:  Current 18¢ per gallon is 10¢ less than national average.  In 1992, the state gas tax was 16½% of the cost per gallon. Today, 18¢ is 9% of the cost per gallon. 30¢ would be 15% of the cost per gallon (at $2.00/gal).
