Parts of a Word Screen
Title Bar: Displays the name of the document. The opening Word screen is always named “Document1.” Menu Bar: Contains the menus you use to perform various tasks. You can open menus using the mouse or the keyboard. Parts of a Word Screen (Continued)
Toolbars: Contain buttons you click to initiate a wide range of commands. Each button is represented by an icon. Word opens with the Standard and Formatting toolbars displayed. Ruler: Shows placement of indents, margins, and tabs. Text Area: Displays the text and graphics in the document.
Parts of a Word Screen (Continued) Scroll Bars: Used with the mouse to move right or left and up or down within a document. The horizontal scroll bar also contains buttons to change the way you view a document. Status Bar: Displays information about the task you are performing and shows the position of the insertion point. Indicators on the status bar show the current mode of operation.

It Finds Those Errors For You Word alerts you to spelling, typographical, and grammatical mistakes. Underlined in red - Check the spelling of the word. You may do this by clicking on the word and pressing the right mouse button. Select correct spelling and proceed. Underlined in green - Check for possible grammatical mistake or typing error.
Basic Text Editing Backspace: Deletes the characters to the left of the insertion point. Ctrl/Backspace: Deletes the word to the left of the insertion point. Delete: Deletes characters to the right of the insertion point. Ctrl/Delete: Deletes the word to the right of the insertion point.
Insert Text versus Overstrike The normal mode of entry is Insert Mode. You may select Overtype or strikeover mode by pressing the insert key or By double clicking on the OVR button on the status line (this is a toggle). Please note, when you do this, the cursor becomes a destructive key since it will write over the top of any previously keyed text.
Naming and Saving a Document Save your data frequently since it can be lost if there is a power failure. The first time you save your document, you must use a “Save As.” This will allow you to name your document. Word will automatically assign the extension of “doc” to each document saved.
Saving Documents for This Class You will save your class documents using your initials and the lesson number. For example: For exercise 1-8, I would save accordingly: ge1-8. The doc extension will be adding automatically.
Printing a Document You may print your document by pressing the printer icon on the standard toolbar. You may also print by selecting File from the menu, and highlighting printer. (Note: if you wish to change any of the printer settings, you must print using this method.) You may also press Ctrl/P.
Closing and Exiting Word After you save your document, you may: Close by pressing: File/Close Ctrl/W Ctrl/F4. Exit Word by: Clicking on the X in the upper right-hand corner By selecting File/Exit By pressing Alt/F4
