Short constructive response  Follow along with the text while listening to the lyrics of “We’d like to thank you Herbert Hoover.”  Prompt: Determine how the author use of words and phrases depicts America during the Great Depression. Consider the following:  What time were they referring to in the phrase “Prosperity was ‘round the corner?”  What image of America is do these lyrics portray? What words and phrases from the song give you that image?

Roosevelt and the New Deal Hoover  Republican party believed that the economy would recover on its own Roosevelt  More willing to use government intervention to solve economic problems.

First 100 Days  Americans of all political persuasions demanded immediate action be taken when Roosevelt entered office  Congress granted every request Roosevelt presented. This time is know as the First 100 days.  Congress passed 15 major acts to resolve the economic crisis, setting a pace for new legislation that has never been equaled.  Together these programs made up the First New Deal

Women’s role in the Roosevelt Administration  Francis Perkins was the first women to serve in a President’s cabinet.  Eleanor Roosevelt was an important advisor on domestic policies for the New Deal.

New Deal Issues  National Industry Recovery Act was a piece of New Deal legislation that was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court  Roosevelt pushed for the reorganization of the Supreme Court but it failed to become law

Those against the New Deal  Southern republicans were the least likely to be a part of the new Deal coalition  Enemies of the New Deal were often called Fascists  A major criticism of President Roosevelt’s programs to combat the Great Depression was that these programs made people more dependent on the Federal Government.
