Math 110: Pre-Calculus 1 Instructor: Mike Panitz

Math 110: Precalc 12 Schedule for today Project Feedback Analyzing Rational Functions Inverse Functoins Project hand-back

Math 110: Precalc 13 Exam #2: Going Forwards You will (optionally) have the chance to do this again, as a take-home exam –This will be handed out on Monday or Wednesday of next week It will be due on Wednesday, May 30 th –(Wednesday immediately after Memorial Day) 5pm, in my office (319) or 154. –Not handing it in on time will mean you keep your first grade

Math 110: Precalc 14 Reading review for this class: –§ 3.4 – Graphing Rational Functions –§ 4.2 – Inverse Functions Reading for next class: –Exponents Review Worksheet (bring to class) – § Exponential Functions

Math 110: Precalc 15 Projects: Revison You are REQUIRED to hand your first version back in with your second –So I can double-check that you’ve addressed the comments written in your first drafts –If you don’t hand the first draft back in, the second/final draft won’t “count”, grade-wise

Math 110: Precalc 16 Projects: Notes You are also required to send me an electronic copy of the final draft You will be required to send me any electronic materials (PowerPoint slides) in advance of the presentation date, so that I can get everything loaded up & ready to go for everyone. –Again, if you don’t get me electronic copies, then your revision (or presentation) won’t “count”, gradewise.

Math 110: Precalc 17 Revision Due Wednesday, May 23 rd Make sure that you’re clear on what you need to do I’ll be around –Tomorrow (Thursday), ≥ 3:30pm –Monday (before/after class) –Over (be CLEAR about your question, and remember that I don’t have a copy of your project)

Math 110: Precalc 18 Projects: Philosophy It’s good to give you lots of detailed feedback, and a chance to fix things –Closer to how things work in the “real world” –Thus, you should expect to do a revision –Even if you don’t “need” to, go for the points! If I don’t ding people points, people don’t fix things

Math 110: Precalc 19 Projects: Sources If you use an Internet site, make sure not just to include the URL, but also a short description of the site, any biases you’ve found, and/or recommendations from other sites/magazines/people.

Math 110: Precalc 110 Domain, Zeros, etc Make sure that your results are based on the regression (“constructed”) functions –NOT on your data –You should also comment on when the function is reliable (if the function says that gasoline costs $0.00 in 1577 BC, does this make sense? Your function will produce good values within your data set, will hopefully be useful in predicting the near future, and get less reliable further out Domain (Time) : Year 0, year 1, etc –“Better” functions that year 1983, year 1984,etc –Make sure to explain what ‘negative time’ means

Math 110: Precalc 111 Speculation Data doesn’t support conclusions –If you do speculate, it’s best to state that clearly before you do

Math 110: Precalc 112 Other points R 2 values –“none of the more-complicated functions had a significantly higher r2 value” Prose Data table
