Unit 3 Vocabulary EXPRESSIONS

Algebraic Expression

Arithmetic Expression  An expression that represents a numeric value.  Example: = 8

Associative Property  Associative property of addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) Associative property of multiplication (a × b) × c = a × (b × c)

Base  (of a power): The factor being multiplied by itself. Base → 3 ⁴

Coefficient  The number part of a term that includes a variable.

Commutative Property  Commutative property of addition: a + b = b + a Commutative property of multiplication :a × b = b × a

Evaluate  To find the value of an expression by replacing each variable in an expression with numbers.

Evaluate an Algebraic Expression  To find the value of an expression by replacing each variable in an expression with numbers.

Exponent  The number of times a number or expression (called base) is used as a factor of repeated multiplication. Also called the power.

Expression

Like Terms  Terms that have identical variable parts. Two or more constant terms are also considered like terms.

Numerical Expression  An expression that contains only numbers and operations and that represents a particular value.

Power  A number that can be expressed using an exponent.

Ratio  A comparison of two quantities that have the same unit of measure.

Substitute  To replace one element of a mathematical equation or expression with another.

Term  A number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables.  Examples: 5e, m, 8x, 3ab, and -9r 2 s are all terms

Tangram  An ancient Chinese square puzzle consisting of seven pieces that can be rearranged to make various shapes.

Table  A means of organizing data in rows and columns for a particular purpose.

A letter or symbol used to represent a number or quantities that vary Variable
