Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – O-RING Part The O-RING utilizes a Swept Base feature. The SWITCH utilizes the Loft Base and Dome feature. The LENSCAP and HOUSING utilize the Swept Boss and Loft Boss feature. A Swept feature requires a minimum of two sketches:  Path  Profile Sketch the path (cross-section) and profile on different planes. The profile follows the path to create the following Swept features:  Swept Base  Swept Boss

The Sweep-Base feature uses:  A circular path sketched on the Front Plane.  A small cross section profile sketched on the Right Plane. Sketch the path and profile on different planes. Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – SWITCH Part The SWITCH is a purchased part. The SWITCH is a complex assembly. Create the outside casing of the SWITCH. Create the SWITCH with the Loft Base feature. The first plane is the Top Plane. Create two reference planes parallel to the Top Plane.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – SWITCH Part Insert the Loft feature. Select the profiles to create the Loft feature. Insert the Dome feature to the top face of the Loft.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – LENSCAP Part Create the LENSCAP. Review the Extruded Base, Extruded Cut and Shell features introduced in the earlier chapter. The first feature is an Extruded Base feature. Select the Front Plane for the Sketch plane. Sketch a circle centered at the Origin for the profile. Utilize a Draft Angle of 5º.

The diameter of the Extruded Cut equals the diameter of the Revolved Base feature of the LENS. Insert the Shell feature. The Shell feature removes the front and back face from the solid LENSCAP.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – LENSCAP Part Insert a Revolved Cut Thin feature. The Revolved Cut Thin feature removes material by rotating a sketched profile around a centerline. The Right Plane is the sketch plane. The design intent requires that the Revolved Cut maintains the same Draft Angle as the Extruded Base feature. Utilize the Convert Entities Sketch tool to create the profile. Drag the left end point 2/3 towards the right endpoint. Centerline

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – LENSCAP Part Small thin cuts are utilized in plastic parts. Utilize a Sweep Cut for non-cylindrical geometry. The semi-circular Sweep Cut profile is explored in the chapter exercises.

The thread requires a sketched profile. This cross section profile is called the ThreadSection. The plastic thread on the LENSCAP requires a smooth lead in. Back inside circular edge

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Trim unwanted geometry. Add dimensions. Modify the fillet dimension. Remove all Sharp edges. Insert the Loft feature.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Insert the first Extruded Boss feature. Create the first Extruded Boss feature from the square face of the Loft. How do you estimate the depth of the Extruded Boss feature? Answer: Use the Measure tool.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Insert the Shell feature. Features created before the Shell contained the wall thickness specified in the Thickness option. Position features of different thickness such as the Rib feature and Thread Sweep feature after the Shell. Features inserted after the Shell remain solid.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Insert the second Extruded Boss feature. Create a solid circular ring on the back circular face of the Extruded Base feature. The solid ring is a cosmetic stop for the LENSCAP and provides rigidity at the transition of the HOUSING. Utilize the Front Plane for the sketch. Select the inside circular edge of the Shell.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Utilize Convert Entities to obtain the inside circle. Utilize the Circle Sketch tool to create the outside circle. Extrude the feature towards the front face.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Insert the Draft feature. The Draft feature tapers selected model faces by a specified angle by utilizing a Neutral Plane or Parting Line. The Neutral Plane option utilizes a plane or face to determine the pull direction when creating a mold. The Parting Line option drafts surfaces around a parting line of a mold.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Utilize the Parting Line option for non-planar surfaces. Apply the Draft feature to solid and surface models. A 5º draft is required. The LENSCAP Extruded Base feature has a 5º draft angle.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Create the thread. Create two Sketches:  ThreadPath  ThreadSection Insert the ThreadPlane. Utilize Convert Entities to create a circular sketch referencing the HOUSING Base Extrude feature.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Reuse geometry between parts. The ThreadSection is copied from the LENSCAP and is inserted into the HOUSING Top Plane. Add a Pierce Relation. Midpoint of the ThreadSection Pierce to the back edge of ThreadPath.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Insert the Sweep feature. Creating a ThreadPlane provides flexibility to the design. The ThreadPlane allows for a smoother lead. Name the Sweeps, profiles and paths to locate features and sketches quickly in the FeatureManager.

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Create the First Rib. The Rib feature adds material between contours of existing geometry. Use Ribs to add structural integrity to a part. A Rib requires:  A Sketch  Thickness  Extrusion direction

Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 6 – HOUSING Part Insert the Second Rid feature. The Second Rib feature supports and centers the BATTERY. The Rib is sketched on a reference plane created through a point on the Handle and parallel with the Right Plane. The Rib sketch references the Origin and existing geometry in the HOUSING.
