Research Governance Resource Pack Martin Stevens SSRG chair Social Care Workforce Research Unit King’s College London

Welcome the Pack SSRG welcomes the publication of this pack Contains loads of useful information and resources for RG leads in Local authorities Also useful for researchers Places research governance in context of research regulation – research ethics and peer review Suggests appropriate responses to research undertaken in different contexts and of different scales Supports local authority staff (hopefully mainly SSRG members) to advocate for implementation locally

SSRG Established in 1972 after Seebohm’s encouragement to set up research and statistics sections/units ‘The personal social services are large-scale experiments in ways of helping those in need. It is both wasteful and irresponsible to set experiments in motion and omit to record and analyse what happens. It makes no sense in terms of administrative efficiency and, however little intended, it indicates a careless attitude towards human welfare.' (Seebohm Report 1968 para. 455) Researchers and others from a variety of backgrounds Often working in isolation Hence the need to gather together into...

SSRG Today Spans adult and children social care, health and housing Local authorities, universities/colleges, independent sector Researchers, performance management and information analysts Events, publications networking Channel for feedback to government

Why SSRG supports Research Governance Similar aims - improving standards in health and social care research Research Governance ‘leads’ are in the roles that SSRG was set up for (although now with more diffuse responsibilities) Supporting and developing research governance promotes the aims of SSRG as a whole and support individual members

SSRG support for research governance Event in Birmingham (2002) Supported initial Department of Health funded development activity and DH small grants (SCWRU too) Membership of DH external Research Governance in Social Care Advisory Group – – Contributed to social care implementation plan – Contributors to the first edition of the Resource Pack – Hosted the first edition of the Resource Pack – Contributors to and supporting the second edition And here we are today... helping to launch the new pack (sadly no champagne smashing) Future Web based version as part of web based support for Research Governance
