Terms to Know Capillarity= attraction of water to the surface of rocks. Moves against gravity. Porosity= The size of the gaps between rocks Permeability=
Runoff Water that doesn’t soak into the ground or evaporate but instead flows across Earth’s surface.
Groundwater What is Groundwater???? The water that has seeped into the soil and rock. The underground area is broken down into 4 areas… 1) Zone of Aeration.
What is the Water Table? Zone of aeration • pore spaces contain air

 Last week we discussed how run-off can occur two different ways:  Surface Run-off – water flowing on the surface to streams, rivers and oceans.  Subsurface.

L OCATION OF G ROUNDWATER The underground area is divided into 2 zones The upper zone is the zone of aeration The lower zone is the zone of saturation The zones meet at the water table

VOCABULARY Porous- has holes in it Permeable- water can pass through a rock Aquifer- a rock layer that stores and allows the flow of groundwater Spring- water flowing from the ground Well- man-made hole you get water out of

CAVES Caves are formed by limestone Stalagmites are deposition on the bottom of a cave Stalactites are deposition on the top of a cave

SINKHOLES Depression from limestone

POLLUTION Point source- comes from one thing Nonpoint source pollution- comes from many places

P URIFYING WATER Water goes through a water treatment plant and gets chlorine added to it which gives it its nasty flavor in cities

R ENEWABLE RESOURCES Can be replaced soon after use

N ONRENEWABLE RESOURCES Cannot be replaced until millions of years
