Hot Ground Direct off-line DC supply with bridge rectifier results in a “HOT” chassis “HOT” ground has direct path to electrical hot side of electrical outlet Approximately 67 VDC between “HOT” ground and Earth ground Connecting a ground from a test instrument to a “HOT” ground causes high current through the diode

An isolation transformer electrically isolates the “HOT” side of the AC plug, eliminating the voltage difference and current that may result between ground references

Defeating Isolation The isolation transformer can be defeated if twohot chassis are connected at the same time.

If the “HOT” ground of the power supply becomes electronically connected to exterior parts of the cabinet housing, a shock hazard exists. Protect yourself, your business and your customer. ALWAYS perform a leakage current check after completing a repair!

Causes of Excess AC Leakage Current Defective AC Line or Switching Supply Isolation Transformers Leaky AC Bypass Filter Capacitors Improper Part Installation - Safety Critical Isolation Parts Foreign Objects - Coins, screws, paper clips

SMPS Safety Leakage Paths Switch Mode Transformer Primary to Secondary AC Input Filter Capacitors Isolation Filter Capacitors Between Hot & Isolated Grounds

Effects of AC Leakage

A safety leakage test ensures that the monitor doesn’t have AC line leakage to exposed metal parts Virtually all manufacturer’s service literature requires a safety leakage test be performed at the completion of any repair Safety leakage testing applies to all consumer electronic devices powered from the AC line, whether or not they have a 3-wire power cord Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) standard is 500  a Other standards may apply International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard is 700  a Safety Leakage Testing

Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) standard is 500  a International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard is 700  a 1Do not use an isolation transformer for this test. Plug the completely reassembled unit directly into the ac outlet. 2Connect a 1.5K, 10W resistor paralleled by an.015uF capacitor between each exposed metal cabinet part and a good earth ground such as a water pipe, as shown above. 3Use an ac voltmeter with at least 5000 ohms/volt sensitivity to measure the potential across the resistor. 4The potential at any point should not exceed 0.75 volts. A leakage current tester may be used to make this test; leakage current must not exceed 0.5 milliamps. If a measurement is outside of the specified limits, there is a possibility of shock hazard. The chassis should be repaired and rechecked before returning it to the customer. 5Repeat the above procedure with the ac plug reversed. (Note: An ac adapter is necessary when a polarized plug is used. Do not defeat the polarizing feature of the plug.) Manufacturer Safety Leakage Test
