Introduction to computers 1

Objectives  Define a computer  Identify types of computers  Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computer usage. 2

What is a Computer?  An electronic device that can:  Accept data and instructions  Process them (sort, perform calculations etc.)  Store the result  And produce output 3

Types of Computers  Mainframe  Minicomputer  Microcomputer (PC) 4

Mainframe  Big, powerful  Used by large organisations  Universities  Banks  Utility Companies 5

Minicomputer  Smaller than mainframe and less powerful  Much bigger than average PC  Obsolete 6

Microcomputer  Contains a microprocessor  Much smaller than other types  Better known as the PC  Main form factors (in decreasing size):  Desktop  Laptop/Notebook  Palmtop 7

Desktop PC monitor tower (Contains CPU) mouse keyboard 8

Laptop PC  Also called a Notebook PC  Hardware combined into a single unit 9

Palmtop PC  Handheld PC  Uses stylus or touchscreen  Smartphones fall into this category 10 stylus

Advantages of Computers  Fast and accurate  Efficient data storage and retrieval  Thousands of books can fit on a USB drive  Do not get bored or tired 11

Disadvantages  Downtime caused by power outages  Health risks  Carpal tunnel syndrome  Eyestrain  Neck and shoulder pain  Job losses 12
