Pulse Production Scenario in India o India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses. o Total Pulse production in India is million tonnes during o More than 80 % area under pulses is rainfed conditions o India is importing 3-4 million tonnes of pulses to meet the domestic requirement. o Government of India has initiated various crop development programmes like NFSM, RKVY, BGREI etc. to enhance the pulses production in the country.

Overview of NFSM-Pulse programme o NFSM was launched in October 2007 to enhance the production of foodgrains including pulses through area expansion and productivity enhancement. o NFSM-Pulses was started in 170 districts of 14 states. o Accelerated Pulse Production Programme (A3P) under NFSM-Pulses was started during 2010 in 16 states to demonstrate production and protection technologies in compact blocks of five pulse crops namely Arhar, moongbean, Urdbean, gram and lentil. o A3P was subsumed under NFSM-Pulses from o Another programme namely Integrated Development of Sixty Thousand Pulses Villages in the rainfed areas under was implemented during under RKVY. o Since NFSM-Pulses was extended to 622 districts of 27 states. o A Programme on Additional Area Coverage of Pulses was initiated since to expand area and enhancement of productivity of pulses during rabi/summer season in major pulse growing states.

Interventions under NFSM –Pulses o Cluster demonstration –States o Cropping system based demonstrations –States o Front line demonstration-NARS o Seed distribution o Integrated nutrient management o Integrated pest management o Resource conservation technology/tools o Efficient water application tools o Cropping system based training o Local initiatives-Mini dal mill

Adaptive Research Projects Sanctioned under NFSM o SAU: 06 o ICAR :02 o ICARDA : 03 o ICRISAT: 03

Policy Initiatives o Utilization of potential area of rice fallow lands for pulse production. o Replacement of low productivity crops with pulses. o Cultivation of summer mungbean. o Promotion of pulses as intercrop with oilseeds. cereals and commercial crops. o Cultivation of pigeonpea on rice-bunds. o Promotion of utera/relay cultivation of Pulses in rice fields. contd

Policy Initiatives Around 50% of the total allocation is made to NFSM- Pulses. The cultivation of pulses as inter-crop with cereals, oilseeds, commercial crops. Cultivation of pulses on farm bunds of paddy fields. At least 30% of the cluster demonstrations under NFSM and BGREI are being conducted by adopting cropping system approach to utilize the paddy fallow area for pulses cultivation. contd

Policy Initiatives Value chain integration of pulse growers through formation of Farmer-Producer Organizations (FPO). SAUs/ICAR/CGIAR institutes are also involved to address various researchable issues of pulses and demonstrations of latest technologies for better yield realization at farmers’ field. Demonstrations of pulses through Krishi Vigyan Kendras for spread of new technologies and seed varieties.
