Hospitality PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Bellwork  Do you think a group, club, business, etc., can run effectively without a leader? Please explain why or why not. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Objectives Today you will…  Identify and apply industry terminology  Identify the characteristics of the four types of management styles  Demonstrate effective group techniques and leadership styles PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Autocratic Style  Autocratic style: gives orders to employees.  Employees are expected to carry out the orders immediately and without questioning  For example, an autocratic style catering manager would tell employees exactly how to set up for a banquet…employees could not give their opinions or make suggestions. 4

Autocratic Style  Can you think of a time when this type of management style is appropriate? PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Bureaucratic Style  Bureaucratic style: manager seeks employee input before he or she makes the final decision  The manager has the final authority, but listens to employees before making decisions. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Democratic Style  Democratic style: manager shares the decision making with the employees.  This type of manager builds trust, respect, and commitment from his or her employees.  The manager tends to be a good communicator and team leader.  The key phrase a democratic leader uses is “What do you think?” 7

Democratic Style  The democratic leader would hold a meeting with the staff.  At this meeting, the group together would decide how to set up the banquet PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Laissez-faire Style  Laissez-faire style : let it be or hands- off (the term is French for let it be or hands-off)  The employer gives all the power to the employees.  With this style of leadership, employees make all the decisions.  This is also described as the “hands- off” approach to leadership. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Laissez-faire Style  Can you think of a time when this type of management style is appropriate? PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

 Democratic  Let’s group decide  Decides as a group  Laissez-faire  Let’s every do whatever  Can really manage anyone  Bureaucratic  Listens, but makes final decision  Decides what is best for the team  Autocratic  Bossy  Tells you want to do and you better do it.

Closure  What types of behaviors did your manager have?  Did they participate?  Did they sit back and let your group make the decisions?  Would you like to work for that style of manager?” PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,
