Presentation transcript:

1947- present By: CarlyDeWeerd and Rachel Ysinga

 Started as a hockey player in Dundas  To improve his skating, joined Dundas Figure Skating Club  Started to become skilled in figure skating, so he left hockey  More ice time with figure skating as well, so it all developed there

 Started to compete, but moved to Toronto while in high school so he could get more ice time  Trained out of the Toronto Cricket, Skating, and Curling Club

 Knight had 3 coaches throughout his career who helped him develop along the way  Ellen Burka- she was his first coach in Dundas and helped him get on 1 st World Team  Dennis Silverthorne- had him for 1 year  Sheldon Galbrath- he helped me understand competing at a higher level

 National Junior Champion at the age of 13  Canadian Championships  1962—3 rd  —2 nd  1965,66,+67—1 st  North American Championships  1965—3 rd  1967—1 st

 World Championships  1963—8 th  1965—3 rd  1966—7 th  1967—4 th  Olympics: Innsbruck, Austria  1964—9 th  He was very proud to be able to represent Canada at a national level for 5 years straight 3 rd Place Finish

 After the World’s in 1967 he became pro  Many questioned his decision, he said,” I’d have enjoyed representing Canada at the Olympics next winter, but I’m not sure the Olympics mean a tremendous amount unless you’ve got a real shot at a gold medal.”  Signed immediately with “Ice Capades”  Spent 13 years touring  Also toured with “Holiday on Ice in Europe  Retired in 1980

 Every year had to compete to get on Canadian Team  At World Championship’s, you were competing against the best meaning you had to do your very best

 His own pressures: - To succeed - To do my very best every time - Build confidence to perform in competition like you did in practice

 Dundas: gave small grants and more ice time  Ontario and Canada: did not assist, carded athletes did not exist back then  Money for sport mainly came from parents who were there to support you financially

LEGENDARY NIGHT OF FIGURE SKATING: MAY 1999 at the Air Canada Centre (he is 3 rd from left)

 Living in Burlington with his wife, Janet  Has 2 children, 1 married, Knight has 2 grandchildren  Currently working at the Burlington Figure Skating Club as a coach
