Announcement: the deadline for Viewing Response 2 has been extended to Wednesday, Feb. 6 th Folks who have VR2 ready will get it stamped and an extra 5 points added onto your grade on the assignment (half of a letter grade on this assignment. Socratic Discussion Assignment Review for Weds., Feb 6 th Order of Business

Opening Reflection My grandmother, who was born in 1885, used to say whenever something was changed forever, “The salt’s in the stew,” which I took to mean that we had to accept a new view of the world because there was no going back. It was understood that we had to have a positive can-do attitude and move forward. Lizz Wright sings of this, and I am certain that my old grandmother, long in her grave, nonetheless looks down on the world from the rather nice neighborhood where she now resides and approves heartily of Ms. Wrights’ song.Lizz Wright sings of this Listen to the lyrics of “Salt” by Lizz Wright.the lyrics Reflect on how you have changed and how you will forever view the world differently due to what you have learned from our study of Sustainable Food | Sustainable Agriculture

Socratic Discussion Norms Reflect in writing for each question during the pre-seminar reflection period. Listen carefully to others. Stick to the question. Support your position with references to the film or text. Speak clearly, one at a time, with no cross-talk. No side conversations under any circumstances. Accept other people’s opinions without immediately judging them as right or wrong. Participate openly. Value other people’s opinions by acknowledging them.

Socratic Discussion Round 1: Explore the pros & cons of having laws and regulations that mandate accurate labeling of food regarding contents, origin of contents, whether the food was organically grown, and whether the food contains GMOs. Round 2: We all agree that in order to be sustainably produced and consumed, good, healthy, fresh food must be accessible. Explore what we mean by “accessible.” Round 3: In what ways should we consider the workers who grow, harvest, process, and transport our food from field to supermarket?

Socratic Discussion Round 4: Explore the pros and cons of companies being able to legally own the DNA in food plants and animals. What, if any limits should be placed on ability of private corporations to use the presence of this DNA as a reason to obtain hefty court judgments against farmers. Round 5: What actions are you willing to take to improve the sustainability of our food system?

Reflection & Discussion Listen to the lyrics of Bob Marley, in “Get Up, Stand Up.”Bob Marley Reflect on what we can do to “fix” the broken areas of our food system. Share your reflection with your group. What “fixes” emerged from each group’s discussion?

Homework Due Wednesday, February 6 th Viewing Response 2 and Food, Inc Vocab Worksheets 2 & 3 If you have completed these assignments, you have no homework to complete for Wednesday. We begin your first essay on Wednesday and we return to our study of English Grammar (oh joy!)
