BISD New Teacher Orientation Brenda Mesa Secondary Mathematics Coordinator August 12, 2015

Welcome to BISD! You have joined the best math team in the state of Texas!

Norms Silence your cell phones Take care of yourself and those around you Stay focused Learn by doing Ask questions Apply what you learn

Goals for Today  Familiarize you with the district curriculum documents that can be found in Eduphoria  Provide you with a basic understanding of the Workshop Model  Provide you with strategies for implementing writing in your classroom

Curriculum Documents  Eduphoria

Activity – What is the structure of your class?  Everyone needs 4 sticky notes  On each sticky note write down one major component of the structure of your class  At your table make an infinity diagram (group like components together)  Classify the groups you came up with

Lesson Components  Opening  Mini Lesson  Work Time  Reflection and Sharing How does this list compare with the list that we just came up with?

Workshop Model  Math workshop is based on the belief that knowledge emerges in a community of activity, discourse and reflection.  We become mathematicians by engaging in mathematical problems, finding ways to mathematize them, and defending our thinking in a math community  All learners can be successful in math, given the requisite support

Workshop Model Purpose  Engage students in worthy tasks of important mathematical ideas  Give time to think, work, and communicate  Construct mathematical understanding for themselves  Notice their own development as mathematicians

Workshop Model Beliefs  Students are capable of brilliance  Understanding takes time  There is more than one way

Workshop Model Key Aspects  Challenging tasks  Community  Collaboration and Discourse  Conferring

Workshop Model Outcomes  Develop student’s conceptual understanding of mathematics  Increase student confidence  Twenty-first century skills  Problem solving  Collaboration  Critical thinking  Communication

Structure of the Workshop Model  Opening  Mini Lesson  Work Time  Reflection and Sharing What makes this model unique from other classroom instructional models is that it focuses on student thinking before, during, and after work time.

Ticket Out the Door  3 things you learned today  2 things you would like to know more about  1 question you still have
