The Teaching of Religious and Moral Education Colin Nicol, Quality Improvement Officer Education Service

The Education (Scotland) Act 1980 imposes a statutory duty on local authorities to provide religious education in Scottish Schools Education Service

“Scottish Ministers believe that RME makes an important contribution to the development of our children and young people as successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens.” Advice Note 2011 Education Service

“Schools should plan and deliver religious and moral education as both a specific subject discipline and one which contributes to high quality interdisciplinary learning.” Advice Note 2011 Education Service

Parental right to withdraw: Education (Scotland) Act 1980 – conscience clause advises that parents have a statutory right to withdraw children from RME However….. “Without this aspect of their education learners will not enjoy the full benefits of CFE” Advice Note 2011 Education Service
