Career Paths July 2001

Professional Career Paths Tools to illustrate progression through the CCSD system Initial Paths: Teacher  Principal Teacher  Master Teacher Others to follow... Guide to help planning and preparation

Career Path Elements Academics Professional development Formal in-field training and education Leadership training Assignments / Positions Career Progression Jobs, Positions and Assignments of increased responsibility Credentialing Certification Meeting professional state and national standards

Career Path Guidance There is no “approved” path Many different ways to reach goal Illustration shows how others have done it Different skill sets required for different jobs Successful teachers don’t always make successful administrators, and vice versa Obtaining Ph. D. does not guarantee success as principal Build breadth and depth in profession Advancing too quickly can lead to difficulty Best advice: “Bloom where you’re planted”

Preference Statement Assignment Preference Statement Form Allows Teachers and Administrators to indicate their career plans Direct input to Mentor, Supervisor and Human Resources on preferences Will help match personal preferences with District requirements Reviewed by Mentor and Supervisor Encourages involvement and dialogue Optional, but can be completed as often as needed
