FYE Project Assignment AJANEA DAVIS

How do Classroom choices impact me?  Smaller class sizes give me more one-on-one time with the professor.  Smaller class sizes helps me better interact with my peers.  Class discussions are often lead in a positive environment.  Class discussions involve discussing career and future choices, helping me to better explore my personal career options.  Having professors as positive role models can impact me in ways to shape me into a better person.

How do Community choices impact me?  Being an active member in the community can help me be a better person.  Participating in community service can help me to be a well-rounded person.  Volunteering in things that interest me can help me get a better understanding and experience in my career field (e.g. When I volunteered at Girls Inc. and The Boys & Girls Club).

How do Career choices impact me?  Career choices can impact me by helping me establish a plan to follow after graduating college.  Having multiple career choices can help me to have a more diverse selection in choosing a major/career after graduation.  Career choices can impact me by helping me develop goals thereby forcing me to aim high to achieve them.

How does this connect to the Liberal arts & VWC’s community?  Liberal arts help students explore interests such as humanities, arts, social sciences, and mathematics, and natural sciences. (Bogart, 2011)  This connects to liberal arts by helping students better prepare for their future and by helping them create a career plan to follow after graduation.  This connects to the VWC community because faculty is always there to help the students by giving them one-on-one time.  VWC’s community is a very positive environment and this connects to the community by providing students with a sense on community.

What I have learned about my own Self-governance?  In PORTfolio, we took personality tests to help us better understand the type of person that we are.  My personality type is ENFP (Extraversion, Intuition, Feeling, Perception).  ENFP: Warmly enthusiastic, high-spirited, ingenious, imaginative. Able to do almost anything that interests them. Quick with a solution for any difficulty and ready to help anybody with a problem. Often rely on their ability to improvise instead of preparing in advance. Can usually find compelling reasons for whatever they want. For some ENFPs, relationships can be seriously tested by their short attention spans and emotional needs. They are easily intrigued and distracted by new friends and acquaintances, forgetting their older and more familiar emotional ties for long stretches at a time. And the less mature ENFP may need to feel they’re the constant center of attention, to confirm their image of themselves as a wonderful and fascinating person.  Careers involving my personality type include: Counseling Psychologist, Healthcare Social Workers, Psychology Professor, Social Work Professor, Elementary school Teaching, Math Professor, and more!  This was helpful in helping me choose which type of career path I wanted to go down and also accurate because I actually plan on majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Social Work!

4 year plan  Complete all academic requirements and graduate college with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Social Work.  I plan to become a teacher immediately after graduation.  I plan to teach kindergarten in Newport News (3 years at title one school; they pay back all student loans).

Major: Elementary Education  Achieve passing scores on Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators or SAT/ACT equivalent and passing scores on the VCLA, or passing scores on VCLA and Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Math. Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators VCLA  Maintain an overall cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 at the time of application.  Achieve a grade of C or better in ALL Professional Education courses.  For History and Social Science, elementary, middle education, and special education must take and pass the Civics Education Module and submit certification of completion.Civics Education Module  All teacher candidates must take and pass Child Abuse and Neglect Module and submit certification of completion.Child Abuse and Neglect Module  All teacher candidates must take and pass the CPR training. This course should meet the following three requirements: CPR-AED-First Aid.  (VWC page about Education majors) --

Elementary Education  Maintain the required GPA in your major  GPA requirement for the Comprehensive Liberal Studies major is 2.5  Grades of C or better in ALL Professional Education courses  Pass Praxis II prior to the start of pre-service student teaching  Elementary/Special Education ONLY:  Pass the Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE) assessment upon completion of EDUC 320 and EDUC 321  NOTE: Passing scores on VCLA, Praxis II, and RVE (where applicable) are required for licensure by the Virginia Department of Education
